The best book on Kwanzaa!
I have used the paperback copy for the past two years during Kwanzaa. Each year I find something I missed before. It is the best book for all ages on the subjects. It tells you everything you want to know.

A great reference. Riley writes about the holiday
This is another great reference source by Riley. She writes and tells everything about the holdiay that anyone needs to know. The book is organized in such a way that you can read a section, gain information, put it down and come back for more. I love this book and the cover is beautiful.

I love this book!
Kwanzaa is based on the universal principals of the Creator God and these principles are the part of every person's life, regardless of their culture or ethnicity.

Crystal Dreams - A Dream Story Come True!
I love romance novels only if they are of the "old school" style. So refreshing to see a romance that doesn't have to depend on pornographic passages and illicit activities. It's wonderful to see a book written by a man that seems to understand how a woman real feels about romance. Hope Mr. Riley is either writing more just like this, can't wait for his next book. Hint. The Depressed Child: A Parent's Guide for Rescuing Kids
Published in Paperback by Taylor Pub (February, 2001)
Author: Douglas A., Dr. Riley
Average review score:

A must read for parents and teachers.
This book not only describes the symptoms of depression, but also gives parents a plan to "rescue" their children. I cannot recommend it highly enough. It is highly readable and understandable.

Sobering, powerful, and essential
The Depressed Child: A Parent's Guide To Rescuing Kids is a book written to empower parents who feel helpless in understanding the negative self-images and unhappy emotions that affect their children. Author Dr. Douglas Riley is a clinical psychologist who specializes in child and adolescent psychology, who has operated a private outpatient clinic since 1994; here, he presents parents with clear, detailed, easy-to-understand information about adolescent depression and what to do about it. Topics include how to overcome the "I'm inferior" myth; how to handle the "miniature marriage" phenomenon in teen dating relationships and providing consolation when these "marriages" fail; and how to evaluate and select from the methods to manage a child's depression. Sobering, powerful, and essential to understanding the mind of a depressed adolescent, The Depressed Child is highly recommended.

Finally, there is help!
As someone who has experience child and adolescent depression from both directions-having been a depressed child and the mother of a depressed adolescent-I couldn't stop my head from nodding in agreement with each "hopeless belief" Dr. Riley uncovered and addressed in his most recent book, The Depressed Child: A Parent's Guide for Rescuing Kids. I quietly folded the book back together after reading the last chapter, filled with a sense of relief. Finally, there is help out there!

With this book, Dr. Riley confirms the seriousness of a childhood problem often ignored and rarely understood by parents (and other adults responsible for the well-being of children). But, unlike other books written on this subject, he is not satisfied with simply bringing child and adolescent depression to a level of awareness. Instead, in a very calm yet firm, non-confrontational yet assertive tone, Dr. Riley insists that parents accept responsibility and take an active role in rescuing their children from depression. And just as clearly he provides them, in the form of "replacement beliefs," with the lifelines they need to do so.

While he acknowledges that chemical imbalances can cause depression, Dr. Riley's focus is on cognitive, or thought-based, depression. The book is organized around ten hopeless beliefs depressed children and adolescents often adopt about their selves and their lives. By using real-life examples from his years as a practicing child and adolescent psychologist, Dr. Riley is able to let the reader see not only the child's negative thought process in action but also how to challenge and restructure it.

Readers will not be turned off by any psycho-babble or professional jargon. Instead, this book is written clearly with the intended audience, concerned parents, in mind. References and examples are tangible, realistic and current. In fact, Dr. Riley has worked hard to relate to the current trends of the day by making numerous references and connections between good old-fashioned humanness and the age of technology, for example when he insists that "Fortunately, the brain can be reprogrammed."

It is with one of his references to technology, however, that I have my one complaint about this book. In mentioning sources available for readers who want information beyond the focus of his book, Dr. Riley suggests that any information acquired via any web site "should be read with a grain of salt." Certainly there are many, many web sites that should be discounted in terms of accuracy and believability; there are, however, effective ways to establish the credibility of the architect and information posted. The blessing of the Internet is that it has flung wide open doors that previously blocked information, knowledge and support from a huge segment of society and has piqued the curiosity and satisfied the needs of millions. As a matter a fact, I never would have known about Dr. Riley's book, if it wasn't for being "wired" - and for that matter, nor would this review exist without the aid of a web site. I certainly hope those who read this book review take what I have to say with much more than a grain of salt.

In his book, Dr. Riley states that childhood and adolescent depression is "the brain's attempt to get the conscious mind's attention." The Depressed Child: A Parent's Guide for Rescuing Kids is Dr. Riley's attempt to get the parents' attention. While the real value of this book comes to those who have a child already identified as being depressed (there is still a desparate need for a book that helps parents recognize early signs of depression), given the social climate of today it should be required reading for parents of all school-aged children.

Broadcasting and Cable Magazine
"This book, by award winning children's show host "Captain Noah", while designed to explain how television works to children, is written and illustrated in such a clear and easy-to-understand style that it is an excellent primer for anyone. Engaging and informative."

Parenting Magazine
"From Satellites to Soap Operas (Television's Captain Noah) explains it all in this lively and sophisticated look at the television industry."

brilliant it must have been written by God's assistant!!
Received in stocking for christmas and was so compelling that Christmas lunch and afternoon nap with Santa was delayed by three hours. The author of this book was clearly a celebrated performer not recognised in his day and throughout it's pages there is the distinct impression that his daughters artistic flair and innovative style is reflected in the authors presentation. Well worth twice the cover price.

Reveiw from Security Management, September, 1998
Kidnappings in India and the Philippines. Violent robberies in St. Petersburg, Russia, and Washington, D.C. Hotel fires in Las Vegas and Havana. How can a business traveler keep safe while on the road? This book tries to answer that question, and for the most part, it does so in fine fashion. International terrorism, plane hijackings, hostage situations, and street crime have made the security executive an important resource for the peripatetic business person. This pocket-size resource provides an easy, convenient way of informing the corporate road warrior of the dangers that exist, how to avoid them, and how to escape them. Its small size also makes the book easy for an executive to pack with belongings so that he or she can have an on-site reference. The simple chapter layout and titling make it easy to pick out topics of immediate interest, such as dealing with hotel fires, using public facilities, or preparing for a trip on short notice. The book is written in such an easy prose style that it makes good reading for a short plane flight--though a lot of information is squeezed into the book's 185 pages. ...this is a valuable little book

From The Tactical Traveler on BizTravel.com, June 8, 1998
Maybe it is the revelation that two historic enemies, Hindu India and Muslim Pakistan, now have state-of-the-art weapons of destruction, but I'm feeling a bit paranoid about travel again. If you're similarly spooked, check out the second edition of "Travel Can Be Murder," a practical, easy-to-follow guide to on-the-road safety. Written by psychologist Terry Riley, the paperback offers more than 600 useful and thought-provoking tips. You've read most of the information before, but consider this a refresher course on paranoia, the traveler's best friend.

Beyond Bop Drumming
Published in Paperback by Warner Brothers Publications (February, 1997)
Authors: John Riley and Dan Thress
Average review score:

Wanna play like Elvin Jones? Here's how...
Another great book from John Riley. This is of course more challenging than "The Art of Bop Drumming", which should be read and studied thoroughly before digging into this one. The included CD is very useful. The post bop drumming is studied in a logical sequence, with in depth analysis of timekeeping and solo examples from the most important drummers.

Useful book for drummers
I've often enjoyed John Riley's columns in Modern Drummer magazine. He really knows how to present information in an accessible way. The charts are easy to read and the accompanying c.d. is excellent. A must for the aspiring jazz drummer.

6 Stars for Contemporary ATx with Adolescents!
Shirley Riley has synthesized her vast clinical experiences with adolescents into a wonderfully pragmatic, insightful, and realistic text which addresses contemporary adolescence and today's priorities in adolescent treatment. While other authors have described the use of art therapy with adolescents, Riley goes beyond classic and often outdated developmental and psychological theories about adolescence and takes a refreshing look at adolescent therapy within a contemporary context. The significance of societal, cultural, and familial inlfluences is emphasized along with the importance of narrative approaches, post modern thought, and short-term, solution-focused treatment. Riley also infuses a variety of salient clinical issues such as distancing, reflecting, and timing in adolescent therapy, addressing and respecting metaphorical communication, and understanding the therapist's countertransference or "entanglements" that inevitably arise when working with adolescents. Additionally, the reader is treated to lively case descriptions and practical clinical applications of art therapy in adolescent group treatment, adolescents and family therapy, inpatient and outpatient populations, residential programming, school settings, and a wide range of individual treatment situations.

Scary is key to this book
Vampires, Jack the Ripper, Romance, Mystery, Warewolves, Gypsies, what doesn't this book have? I was totally taken in from start to finish. There where even a couple of times where I could swear the hair was rising on the back of my neck. Great story, lots of action, wanted more.

WOW!
This book grabs me from page one to the last. I am hoping for a second since I see where there has been room left for the option. Bravo, L.C.

The Devil to Pay
Published in Mass Market Paperback by Holloway House Pub Co (May, 1994)
Author: Cole Riley
Average review score:

We shall overcome!!
I just finished this book.A first glance I was surprised that this little book had received 5 stars; but now I know why.I wonder if it was based on a particular person;but I guess that dose'nt really matter, since there are more than we can imagine that were the case.I have read most of Erskine Caldwell's stuff and found this book reminds me of his work.Mr.Riley's style is also straight forward and reads as well as Caldwell or Steinbeck.I will be keeping an eye out for Riley's other books.I live in Canada and I must say Caldwell's works are very difficult to find.Other than God's Little Acre and Tobacco Road they are virtually non existant in libraries or new or used bookstores. In fact;when one asks if they have anything by Erskine Caldwell, the typical response is something like "Oh you must mean Taylor Caldwell".It is hard to believe that an author who was so immensely popular and outsold even Steinbeck at the time could be made to disappear. Is this political correctness at work and what about Twain and Steinbeck?

Extremely Realistic
Johnny Olive has a lot of problems simply because he is black and living in Mississippi in the 1960's. After his wife Willie Mae deserts him, taking the kids with her, Johnny gets into serious trouble with the law and finds himself on the run. On his way to New Orleans, he makes a little detour and ends up with a disgruntled housewife, Shirley, and her son. Shirley is so determined to get away from her husband that she jumps at the chance to leave with Johnny, a complete stranger. Johnny realizes the errors of his ways yet again when he finds out that Shirley's husband is the head of a crime ring after he sends a couple of his henchmen to New Orleans to bring his wife and child home. Despite one bad turn after another, Johnny still finds the time to get involved in the civil rights movement that eventually leads to the Voting Rights Act. He even finds time to shake hands with Martin Luther King, Jr. For those that enjoy books with historical value, The Devil to Pay offers an extremely realistic opportunity to experience some of the discrimination our parents had to endure.

Flower Painting

Paul Riley Flower Painting
Excellent innovative approach to painting flowers in watercolor. Paul Riley departs from the standard format of predictable how to books and speaks of research and investigation, planning and preparation, exactly as he might as a teacher. (He runs successful painting workshops from his studio in Devon.) Flowers are synonymous with color and Riley is a consummate colorist. He uses unusual tools, calligraphy brushes and bamboo pens to achieve his effects. Beautiful color, articulately written.

Flower Painting by Paul Riley
I have just taken up watercoloring as a hobby and having had no classes in watercoloring but having a love of painting flowers, I found this book to be extremely helpful and informative. I copied several of Mr. Riley's pictures and they turned out very well. His information on watercolors and brushes to get started with are extremely helpful and I will be following his advice! I read the book from cover to cover and am looking forward to reading his book on landscapes. His book is easy for even a beginner like myself to understand and use.
